Book Pick for April 2026
I try to avoid national book club book picks because they seem too hyped and probably backed by a huge PR team. Yes, I want to read them, but I want to seek and find those sneaker hits to highlight. Well, Good Morning America won me over this month. Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino was hilariously entertaining in its satirical poke at the stereotypic elitist east coast lifestyle.
Margo and her husband Ian have a plan. They both are settled in their jobs and enduring the pandemic take advantage of low interest rates and the hot real estate market to sell their starter home hoping to move on up in the world.
It is the dream of so many up-and-coming millennials stymied by the modern world economy. Struggling to get pregnant, Margo hangs all her hopes on securing a dream house for their “perfect” family. When she gets an inside scoop on a property about to hit the market, she goes to investigate and immediately falls in love. Drawn to the property, Margo befriends one of the owners at a yoga class and secures dinner with the man’s family.
Margo is already decorating the house in her mind, and her in her purchases, when everything falls apart. Her dream, her job, her marriage…it all seems to be on the line.
But with one final Hail Mary, Margo settles on blackmail. Her search for details into the homeowner who is a professor at Georgetown leads her down a rabbit hole of academic fraud and intrigue she never saw coming.
Both suspenseful and hilarious, this book drew me in immediately, as it obviously did the readers at Good Morning America. The character of Margo is a stereotypical yuppy millennial trying to appear to be better off than she really is. The curse of ever-present social media driving her to an unattainable perfection. It is both relatable and satisfyingly satirical-- a combination of societal commentary and entertainment all in one.
